Series 8 Watch will pair but not update software

My new Series 8 watch will pair with my iPhone 11 Pro Max with ios15.7. After pairing, iPhone setup indicates Watch needs to update its software. The watch will not update its software. iPhone then unpairs watch and restarts pairing attempt. Any suggestions of the problem

Very briefly a dialog box appears when I choose to update software on watch. But it disappears so quickly I haven’t been able to even read it. I took a series of screenshots and finally got a shot of the warning. Thought it might help.

I had the same issue until I updated my iPhone to IOS 16. After the upgrade it worked perfectly.
