Not enough room on disk when trying to update MacBook Air

I am trying to process an update on my brand new MacBook air and I get a message saying there's not enough room on my disk.

The message is reflecting your actual problem. First, you should know that if your HD gets too full it will stop functioning. Second, the way to solve your problem is to remove data from your HD. Either delete sufficient files or install an external disk. Then, copy files over to the external disk so they can the be deleted from the HD to clear needed space. External disks are cost effective and easy to install with vendor provided USB cables. All that may be required is that it first be reformatted.
