My SuperDrive has always been shown under storage in the overview of my 2012 MacBook Pro 17. No changes have been made by me, but I see it's no longer showing up there. Can someone please explain this to me?

first I need to ask, is the superdrive connected directly to the Mac? or is it connected through a dock or hub?
if it's already connected directly, you may want to try and reset the SMC as well as reset the NVRAM. please see these two apple support pages:
