Cannot erase or reformat due to Time Machine inProgress files.

I have an external LaCie disk with two TimeMachine inProgress files which won't erase and I can't reformat the disk either as it won't unmount. Any ideas on how I can reformat this external disk? I'm running Mojave on a Macbook Pro.

Hi, Start with this...

Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at startup), does the problem occur in Safe Mode? Could take 10 minutes or more.

Safe mode attempts to repair Disks & clears lots of caches & loads safe Drivers, & prevents loading of 3rd party extensions, so if Safe Mode works try again in regular boot.
