Can't send a photo to a messaging group from photos app by using group name

I've been part of a group chat for a long time. Let's say the group name that shows up in the messaging app is "Fungroup". If I go into that chat in the message app I can text or add pictures to send.

But I used to be able to go into the photos app, pick a photo, click the send icon, choose messages, and then type "Fungroup" in the "To:" line. This no longer works as of a few months ago. I can pick a photo and choose, one by one, all of the group members but typing the group name no longer works.

Is there a way to fix this?
