Apple Pay refund stuck in limbo

I was refunded for a returned item by the retailer. Unfortunately the debit card registered with Apple Pay that I used for the purchase was linked to an account that I closed down. The retailer says the refund has not bounced back, but it has not come through to me. It seems to be stuck in the Apple Pay system. How can I locate and retrieve this money?
