I have an iphone 6S with 15.7 software, and an Apple Watch Series 6 with 8.7 software, and when I try to update my Apple Watch using my iphone, I get message "to update the software on your apple watch, you first need to update the software on your iphone

Thank you. I started looking at iPhone SE 3rd generation upgrade as that seems to be the best bang for the buck. Thoughts?
