Wondering which app you were using, and what you were dong on the app, when the sound suddenly disappeared.

and

whether ythis is sound you make (microphone) or sound your receive (speakers.

and

whether or not the sound returns ok if you restart your Mac

and

which Mac model (year) you are using. Apple icon > About this Mac >

For overall sound disappearing in all apps:

You might want to check the sound level settings:

Eg: Apple icon (in top menu bar) > System Preferences > Sound > Output / Input

And,: If the app you were using was not from Apple (eg: Zoom),

You might want to check whether that app has permission to access your microphone.

Eg: Apple icon (in top menu bar) > System Preferences > Privacy and Security > Privacy
