If it shows the erase option at the bottom, you can erase it directly. Otherwise you’ll have to erase it by restoring it with a Mac or windows pc. See -> How to remove your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch passcode without a computer - Apple Support

But erasing the device is the on,y way to reset the screen lock passcode.

Are you sure that you are completely locked out? You would have to accidentally enter the wrong passcode 10 times if that is the case.

Unless you really saying that you have forgotten the passcode, you might have to wait 1 minute, 5 minutes, etc before you can enter the correct passcode again.

This will save you from having to reset / erase the phone and then restore it again from a backup.
