Updating to Monterey 12.6.1- Your disk does not have enough free space!!!

Hello Community, I have 53.79GB available of 250.79GB Macintosh HD storage. I want to update to the latest macOS Monterey 12.6.1. Yet it keeps returning 'Your disk does not have enough free space Updating requires 20.71GB of disk space'

Why this bottleneck if I have more than double the available disk space on my Mac?

It is quite annoying because I had do delete a lot of files and folders from my system to increase from 41GB to 53.79GB

Thanks Lanny, I have been considering to add more storage in the future. But I still do not understand why the conflicting pop-up message: If I have up to 53.79GB free space, why the machine cannot update a software that requires only 20.71GB (about 38% of the available space)

Wow, just now tried again and it seems to have worked. I unchecked Xcode and Safari in the updates

In the future, buy more storage space than 256 GBs, it's just not enough for anything more than surfing the Internet and doing e-mail.

You can't add more storage in the future, it's not upgradable. That's why it's important to buy what you need at the time of purchase.

I know, I meant adding more storage (via external HD for example). I am more concerned about the conflicting pop-up message though. More clarity on that would be very welcome
