Apple TV remote changes Sony TV to retail display

The volume buttons on my new Apple TV remote randomly switch my Sony tv to retail display mode (which is a pain to disable). It seems to happen if I press the volume up button multiple times in quick succession, however, it has happened from a random up or down press as well.

Greetings g_p_kal,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. We'd like to have you start with resetting the Apple TV remote to help with this trouble you're having. The steps are found in the Apple Support article: If your Siri Remote or Apple TV Remote isn't working - Apple Support

"Restart your remote

  1. Press and hold the TV/Control Center button  and the Volume Down button  at the same time. Hold the buttons down for about 5 seconds, or until the status light on your Apple TV turns off and on again.
  2. Release the buttons. Then wait 5 to 10 seconds for a Connection Lost notification to appear on your TV screen.
  3. Wait while your remote restarts. When the Connected notification appears, you can use your remote."

Further troubleshooting steps are listed in that same article. Let us know if you have any questions.

Cheers!
