Yes. If it is an APFS file system, you should run First Aid on the Volumes, then the Container, then the device.
You can show all those parts with "Show All Devices" from the View popup menu.
It probably cannot do anything with it if it is still assigned to Time Machine. You may get a disk in use error.
Thanks, I was able to run it without mishap, although it did take a long time. I had repaired the SSD on my M1 iMac and read elsewhere that it would be a good idea to repair the backup disk as well, which made sense to me. Took about 16 hours though.
