My passwords are locked.

When I browse webpages on Safari and need to enter username and password, I usually use autofill. I updated my iMac (intel Mac) to Ventura about 2-3 weeks ago. As I visit a webpage and click the username box, I get a window to autofill the username and password. This password has been always the same as the password I use to log in to the computer. However, today, it would not accept my password. I opened settings and check the passwords tab, and there, I still can't unlock. I went to system setting and Passwords, the same. I never changed the password, and I don't know the password. This is very annoying.

I have a MacBook still running on Monterey, and it has no problems. The log in password to the computer works to unlock the passwords.

So, my question is should I try to reinstall Ventura? Should I try to go back to Monterey (which probably is a safe bet), and how to do that? I am having trouble finding a way to reinstall Monterey. I have TimeMachine backup, and all data are in the cloud, but this is very frustrating and annoying.

Please help, anyone?

Hello DrAlex,

If AutoFill isn't working as expected in Safari on your Mac, we'd like to provide some information on how to proceed.

To start, please check out the suggestions outlined in this link, which may help correct that issue: If AutoFill doesn’t work in Safari on Mac

If AutoFill doesn’t work in Safari on Mac

If you can’t fill in information you previously entered on websites, try these suggestions.

• In the Safari app  on your Mac, choose Safari > Settings, click AutoFill, then make sure “User names and passwords” is selected.
• Make sure any information you want to autofill is saved in your My Card in Contacts. Safari can fill in only contact information that’s in Contacts. For example, if a form requires your phone number but it isn’t on your contact card, you must fill it in manually.
• Make sure the webpage has fields AutoFill can complete.

Safari may be unable to tell which fields are for user name and password, credit card number and expiration date, and so forth.

• If your Mac or Apple keyboard has Touch ID, and you want to use Touch ID to fill in user names and passwords or credit card information, choose Apple menu  > System Settings, click Touch ID & Password  in the sidebar, then turn on “Use Touch ID for autofilling passwords” on the right. (You may need to scroll down.) See Change Touch ID & Passwords settings.

If AutoFill still doesn’t work, the website may not allow it.

To turn AutoFill off, choose Safari > Settings, click AutoFill, then deselect the information you want to enter manually.

Thanks!

I'm having the same problem after upgrading to Ventura. I can access my saved passwords using Keychain Access.app but when I try to autofill a password in Safari I get the same message that "Passwords are locked" and it refuses to accept my admin password. Additionally when go into System Settings > Passwords I get the same problem where it simply refuses to accept my password even though I am entering it correctly. I have even tried resetting my user password but the problem persists. Please help!
