It's very easy to determine if your Mac's performance is being limited by available memory. Please read Check if your Mac needs more RAM in Activity Monitor - Apple Support. If the "Memory Pressure" graph is frequently "red" your Mac will benefit from additional memory. If not, it won't. It's that simple.

Most "slow iMac" reports here are not due to insufficient RAM but rather to a slow—and in your case, 12-year old —mechanical hard drive, the cause of slowness about 98% of the time.

Since macOS 10.9 (2013) Apple has a new way of managing memory. It is quite robust, enough so that old issues due to memory starvation are greatly reduced. The new metrics are Memory Pressure and Swap Used. "Memory used" is outdated.

In this screenshot from my 2010 iMac 27:

over 11GB of the 12GB of physical RAM was used, but Pressure was at minimum and Swap was zero. The computer was running perfectly a the time of that screenshot. No "slows"

I would have to say no. Plus there hasn't been a 17" iMac since 2006.

FWIW, if you meant a 27" iMac, I would still say no. It's considered obsolete. It can't be serviced. It can't be upgraded beyond High Sierra.
