Long press for special characters

The long press function for umlauts on my mac does not work any longer since I updated OS to Ventura. How can I re-install this function?

Make sure your input source is set to US.

Make sure you do not have Key Repeat set to OFF.

Make sure you do not have Webroot installed.

Try opening Terminal app and type

defaults write -g ApplePressAndHoldEnabled -bool true

press return and then restart.

I made two changes

under keyboard settings I changed 'Delay until repeat' from 'long' to a middle setting and changed the input source from GB to US
now I changed back to GB setting - accents are working

Your tips were very helpful, I write a lot in German, sometimes French - makes life a lot easier!

British should work the same as US does. If you go back to that, is the accent menu still missing?
