USB audio device stopped working after upgrade to Ventura

I have a generic USB sound card which I bought about one month ago.

Under Monterey it worked exactly as expected - plug and play, 'USB Audio Device' appears in my device list, line in and out both work perfectly.

Yesterday I made the mistake of upgrading to Ventura and the device is no longer visible. I have tried it in several different USB ports and it never shows up. I have rebooted the Mac a couple of times. No dice.

Is this a known 'feature' of Ventura, are there some kind of additional drivers I now need (?!) or is there something else I can do?

MacBook Pro 14" with M1 Pro, so resetting my SMC is not an option.

I do a lot of work with external audio so this is critical to my workflow so any answer (short of downgrading to Monterey or getting a new, expensive, Apple-Certified sound card) would be very welcome...

I just tried plugging it into a friend's M1 MacBook Air with Ventura, and a Samsung phone with Android, and it also didn't appear in either of those. I wonder whether the device itself is broken. I guess I'll have to get another USB sound device to check.. 😐
