I think my iPad has completely died.

I had charged my iPad all day, and it still is on the low battery screen, but it shows the charger is plugged in. I tried 3 different chargers, I have been charging it for over 24 hours, and it is still dead! I might as well ask the company itself if anyone has any suggestions to fix it, or if it’s time to finally say “bye” to the iPad’s battery after 4-5 years.

I don’t think it’s any of these. Every time I turn it on it just shows the low battery icon. I know it’s not frozen because I can unplug and replug it, and the icon that shows the charger with the lightning bolt disappears and reappears. I tried to hold the off buttons to the iPad as well, it just won’t go back to the apple screen. The battery has been iffy for a few months and has been draining more quickly, so I shut it off for long periods of time. Even going a month with it shut off, and turning it back on with about 50% drained. Recently it has being dying even at 70 percent left. Now, it’s just dead with no apple logo appearing even after 24 hours of charge. Thanks for your help but I think my iPad battery finally gave up.

The battery in that iPad is dead.

You have, already, done everything possible.


Time to use the “Support” link, in the top black Apple Website menu bar, at the upper right hand corner of every Apple Support Community Webpage to attempt to schedule an appointment with your nearest Apple Store location and have that iPad evaluated/diagnosed and options presented to you.

Apple Store employees will be glad to help/assist you.


Typically, Apple stores DO NOT do any type of iPad repairs, but ONLY offer in/out-of-warranty device replacement.

If Apple determines your battery needs replacing and this iPad is a still supported device, a device replacement, in lieu of an actual, physical iPad teardown and battery replacement, should cost $99 U.S.D., plus tax.

Troubleshooting generally requires substitution of the Power Adapter and cable for another known-good item. Most models of iPad require a Power Adapter rated at 12W or greater to reliably charge. 5W Power Adapters intended for older models of iPhone are inadequate to charge an iPad; if the iPad charges at all, charging will be very slow.


Be aware that many computer USB ports cannot source sufficient power to charge an iPad. Unless explicitly designed for charging connected devices, computer USB ports are typically limited to 0.5-1A @5V (i.e., 2.5-5.0W).


If you continue to experience difficulties when using an appropriate Power Adapter of 12W or greater, you might be best advised to seek assistance directly from from Apple Support - and request a remote diagnostic test to verify the battery condition. You can contact the Support Team using the Support link at top-right or bottom-left of this page. Alternatively and perhaps easier, you can initiate and manage your support cases using the excellent Apple Support App. If not already installed on your iPad, the App can be downloaded from the App Store:

Troubleshoot the iPad’s Power:

Rather than getting this serviced right away, save a few by troubleshooting the iPad’s power:

Seems your Battery Health is draining rapidly. Is that correct? 

Troubleshooting a Draining iPad:

System resources a likely being swollen up, so to speak. So, start with clearing space. Try the following:


I. Cool Down the iPad:

For a few hours, perform the following...

  • Power Off: the iPad for a bit
  • Unplug: any Cables
  • Place it Atop: Laptop Cooler
  • Keep it in: an open space
  • Keep it Out of: direct sunlight


II. Clear Space:

Having little empty space can heat things up. So, here is what to perform...


A. Clear Temporary Internet Files:

Clear your Temporary Internet Files(Cookies & Cache) of Safari:

Also...


B. Clean TV and Music Libraries:

Remove all unneeded files from your TV and Music Libraries. Full-Movies take up 2-4GB typically, and a bunch of those would take up a load of storage, ideally. So, if you have any movies that are not needed, then delete them.

Also...


C. Clear "Other":

Clear the storage named "System Data" (Formerly called "Other"). It basically contains unnecessary files such as caches that are used for system ease of use - all of which gather over time: How to Clear "Other" in your iPhone's Storage - Use Backup - User Tip. Do the same on your iPad as mentioned in that link. Caches would be being used for remembrance of application use.
