Photo library scan stall

I'm pretty much about to give up on my mac products but I'll try in here a last couple of times as I've invested so much in them.

I have about 45K photos on an external drive. I have many problems but they all seem to come out at the same time when I "upgrade" my iOS version.

I am trying to get all the people / faces (and I have no idea why there is a difference) scanned so can actually use my library.

Why does it continue to stall in the scanning process and NOT recognize people / faces that I know for certain are in my library?

Any thoughts here as I am stumped and frustrated with this program. And any thoughts on a better one for windows would be helpful.

Thanks.

How big is your library?

How many videos do you have?

Where is the library located? If on an EHD how is it formatted and connected to your Mac?

Do you have iCloud Photos enabled?

Remember Photos is a free app and they certainly don't haver access to the NSA's for CIA's artificial intelligent algorithms for face/object indemnification.

Personally I've not had problems with it on a 35,000+ library. I don't run it all the time as it's not my primary, System Photo Library, but it does get the faces identified when I leave it open for an afternoon.

If you don't have iCloud Library enabled try opening the library with the Option+Command keys held down so as to repair the library. See if that helps.

Next, boot into Safe Mode according to How to use safe mode on your Mac and test to see if the problem persists. Reboot normally and test again.

NOTE 1: Safe Mode boot can take up to 3 - 5 minutes as it's doing the following;

• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

NOTE 2: if you have a wireless keyboard with rechargeable batteries connect it with its charging cable before booting into Safe Mode. This makes it act as a wired keyboard as will insure a successful boot into Safe Mode.

I've had similar problems with the people/face scanning feature of Photos. I've found that the scanning process is quite slow. When I add new photos to my library, it typically takes overnight for the scanning feature to activate. (Your computer needs to be plugged in, of course.) I can then start tagging the next day. But there's no guarantee that any photo with faces you've tagged will retain those tags permanently. They just disappear a lot. Best suggestion I've seen on this forum is to use the captions and keywords feature for people names and disregard the face names feature until Apple figures out how to debug it. That's a lot of manual labor, though, especially if you've got 45k photos. My sympathies!
