This is a basic issue that has not yet been resolved. I am not able in iPad OS(12.9) Books app to only underline, the system forces me to highlight in colour, and then thereafter to select the underline feature, then only delete the colour highlight. This has been the case for a few months, but it has not been addressed. Is anyone having the same problem?

Same. It’s frustrating. I typically use the underline function to tap a word, then hold old it while scrolling to underline text automatically. Now, it seems like I am forced to actually highlight instead of underline and it’s an extra step. Very disrupting to the simple touch process of underlining. Frustrating.

I changed from highlight to underline by keeping clicked the “highlight” tab, and then it keeps in memory that i use it.
But it highlights/underlines elsewhere, above or below where I choose… :(
I am using this method already. But I see it as a software design oversight, requiring correction from apple as you cannot underline directly, you have to highlight first then underline second, then tap and delete the colour higher and then only are you left with the underline.😵💫
If you tap quickly (once) on the word, the Remove option appears.
