El Capitan 10.11.6 is the highest OS X that a 2009 20" iMac can run.

If your iMac is on an earlier OS X version, then you can get El Capitan

Why do you want to upgrade?

That model is considered obsolete by Apple and will no longer work on them. I believe they will, however, provide free diagnostic tests if you're having problems. What do you want to update. The most recent system it can run is OS X 10.11.6, El Capitan. Parts will be difficult to obtain.

How much RAM does it have? You can add additional memory yourself but the cost would probably more than the unit is worth.
