MacBook Pro Ventura won't stop playing UI sound effects.

My MacBook Pro Ventura won't stop playing UI sound effects.

I have toggled them off in Settings>Sound>Play User Interface Sound Effects.

The problem is absent in a newly created administrator user account.

Reboot made no difference.

Reset SMC made no difference.

Reset NVRAM made no difference.

Examples of unsuppressed sound effects: sent mail, sent iMessage, empty trash. I hear no sound for incoming mail.

Suggestions? I'm reluctant to call AppleCare because of recent experiences there. It might be tactless to detail them.
