re-establishing original /users/ folder name

i did find a great number of responses to this question, but most were dated about 10 years ago. I would like an answer dated since 12.6.1 was released.

The question is not much different from the others.

At one time i created an account for user X

then for some unknown reason, I changed the name of the user's folder found at the top level in /users/ to the name, Y.

I changed the name of that folder as i would change the name of any other folder. To the user there is no large scale visible difference. all applications work and files are readily found where expected.

I would like to re-establish the name of the user's folder to be the name that the o/s would have given it. I would also like to make sure that all other issues (such as folder and file permissions remain intact).

My assumption is that changing the name of the user's folder does not change any other

parameter associated with the user's account. Is that true? if not then what can i do to return the parameters to their original state?

Driving this question is that in the current state with the /users/ folder name change,

I am having difficulties in installing Microsoft's OneDrive while i can readily install OneDrive

on other imacs with no problems.

Thank you for responding to such a common question.

Respectfully

Bill

The default name is the user’s short user name.

Step 1. is extremely important. It may only really apply when changing the account name, but I wouldn’t take that chance.
