Hello,

There are different ways to ensure the highest iOS that your device will support is installed on your device.

This support article has instructions about updating an iPhone or iPad wirelessly --> Update your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support

You can also use Mac and PC computers to update system software: Update iOS on iPhone - Apple Support

When updating, your device will update to the highest version currently available that it will support, or it will just say it is up to date and won't install anything. Apple indicates ( Unable to update my iPhone 6 Plus from 12… - Apple Community ) I need to point out the obvious and state that if you want to run a higher system version than your current device will run, that you need to buy a newer device.

For a list of equipment supporting iOS 16 and iPadOS 16, read this article --> iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 are compatible with these devices - Apple Support

You do not write which iPhone you have or which iOS version you are currently on. You may need a computer to update. There may be some challenges in skipping an entire version when updating over the air. See the links I have placed at the bottom.

But you can see your options below:

  • Your iPhone 5S/6 can be updated to: iOS 12.5.7
  • Your iPhone 6S/7/SE 1.Gen can be updated to iOS 15.7.3
  • Your iPhone 8 or newer can be updated to: iOS 16.3.1

You can check your current version here:

SettingsGeneralAbout

You can download and install software updates here:

SettingsGeneralSoftware Update

Remember to connect to Wi-Fi and a charger. Your iPhone must have more than 50% power to update without a charger connected.
