I can no longer send emails from Apple Mail on El Capitan.

Every time I try to send an email, from my comcast.net account, a window appears asking for my password. I type it in and it says that it is "unable to verify the username or password".

BUT, it does receive all my incoming emails from the same account. So clearly the password is correct.

So I decided to change the password via Xfinity website, then updated it on my iMac. Still has the same problem.

When I launch my computer in Safemode, still has the same problem.

Notably, I can use this email account without any problem on my iPhone and my iPad, and my MacBook Pro. It is only a problem on the iMac OS 10.11.6.

Also notably, I have two other email accounts set up in Apple Mail -- iCloud and Gmail. Both are able to send and receive emails no problem.

I made sure to do a System Update that was available.

So I decided to just delete the comcast account from my Internet accounts, and then recreate it. Well now I can NOT add it as a new account anymore. When I try to add it, I get the same message. "Unable to verify account name or password" see screen shots attached.

Additionally I spent over 2 hours via chat and phone with Xfinity support. Basically they just had me try everything I had already tried myself. Then said they were going to write a trouble ticket and then get back to me within 40 minutes, which they did not.

I think Comcast has gone the way of te resat of the Mail Providers, but in the meantimev lpgin in a Browser to your WebMail.

Mac's Mail App is not as modern as iOS's Mail app, Many eMail providers now require a separate App Password different from your eMail password…

Then you may need Ways to securely access AOL Mail…

Yahoo App password…

Generate and manage third-party app passwords

Some older, third-party email apps (that do not use our Yahoo branded sign in page) require you to enter a single password for login credentials. To access your Yahoo Mail account on these apps, you'll need to generate and use an app password. An app password is a long, randomly generated code that gives a non-Yahoo app permission to access your Yahoo account. You’ll only need to provide this code once to sign in to your third-party email app.

Using app passwords with apps that don't support two-step verification (microsoft.com)

What about application passwords? Will that keep working?

If application passwords are being used for MFA (Multi Factor Authentication) along with basic auth as another auth mechanism, then when basic authentication is disabled, app passwords used for MFA will stop working too.

Where can I find more information?

There are several resources that we wanted to provide here as additional reading:

I'm sorry I don't quite understand. What you are trying to tell me in this post? Your first sentence has many typos in it, so it is unclear what you are telling me to do. Just use Web-based mail instead of Apple Mail ???? Is comcast mail not longer compatible with Apple Mail App on El Capitan but it is compatible with Apple mail on iPads and MacBooks and iPhones???

Also the articles you provided are about Yahoo Mail, Gmail, and AOL. What does that have to do with Xfinity/Comcast ????

As previously stated in my question, I have logged in to the Xfinity (comcast) Website and have access to, incoming and outgoing email via their web-based email. And as also previously stated, I can receive and send emails with this same comcast account via Apple Mail on my iPhone, iPad and MacBook. So nothing is wrong with my credentials.

I can no longer send emails from Apple Mail on El Capitan.
