USB-C to headphone jack

I purchased a genuine apple USB-C to headphone jack adapter (A2049) to use my 3.5mm jack headphones with my iPad Air but when I connect nothing happens and the sound continues through the iPad speakers.

Headphones work in Macbook Air M1 headphone connection. Plug adapter in Macbook Air and it does not work also.

Restarting did not work (with USB in on restart and USB out on restart).

Tried different brand adaptor and it does not work. Tried second set of earphones and did not work (both Macbook and Ipad)

I solved both issues.

Macbook--- in system settings, speaker, output I change speaker to USB.

IPad--- I restarted again with adapter in (before turning on) and now it works!
