I can't modify permissions on this external drive in Ventura

Grabbed a TIme Machine backup of my MacBook with Ventura before reformatting HD and reinstalling. Now it won't let me adjust permissions on the drive in Finder and it's not copying some files back. Help!

A Time Machine backup drive is read only. You can't change the permissions.

You should use Migration Assistant or the Time Machine interface to recover files from a backup.
