How do I remove the background in Numbers?

How do I remove the background in Numbers? It's going to print out with all this colored background snd waste gobs of ink. I can get rid of it by sacrificing alternative row colors, but I don't want to do that.

Click on the background itself (= the canvas).

Do not click on a table or any other object (textbook, …).

Then you will see the menu Sheet>Background.

So, more specifically:

  1. Click on the background.
  2. Change the background color to white. This blanks out alternate row colors. Save, however, because Numbers will capriciously quit when I try to redo alternate row colors.
  3. Numbers quits. Reopen. Now the background color is white, and now I can replace alternate line colors. Save before Numbers again quits.
  4. After again reopening, it will print the way I want it.

There must be a simpler way to do this, however...
