iForgot apple ID keeps extending the reset day

I have been trying to reset my password with one of my Mail accounts for over TWO months. Today, I checked in again with 'iforgot.apple.com', and I have to wait an additional 7 days. I just waited 2 weeks, and prior to that, a collective 6 weeks.

Why is this happening?

Account recovery is an automated process, but it does warn you:

  • If you submitted your account recovery request with iforgot.apple.com through your device's browser, you should avoid using that device during this period. Using that device might cancel account recovery.
  • To avoid delays, turn off other devices that are signed in with your Apple ID until account recovery is complete.
