if you pair your AirPods with iPhone:

 You may need to update you iPhone's iOS version to the latest available. 

        About iOS 16 Updates - Apple Support (says iOS 16.5)

       That way the firmware on the AirPods will automatically update also, when paired.

If needed:

You might want to check that you are only connecting AirPods to one device

      at a time. (Eg may not be switching between multiple devices.)

      See if turn off / turn on bluetooth helps

      or
