VIP Mailboxes - no mail in the mailboxes anymore - MacOS Ventura 13.4 (22F66)

I wanted to add someone to my VIP list so that I could see all the emails from them. I added the person and they show on the sidebar, but when you click the name, no emails show in their VIP folder. I tried to remove the iCloud account from my mail and reinstate it thinking it would reset and redo indexing. That didn't work. I tried the Spotlight Search rebuild process, but that doesn't seem to work either.

Also if I look at existing VIP's, I don't see any emails in their folders either. Where there were lots of emails in those folders. Is there anything else I can do to reset the VIP folder indexing to enable the relevant emails to show in their respective VIP folders?

Hi Greggs21,

Thanks for posting in Apple Support Communities.

We understand that your VIP list doesn't show emails when you view from the sidebar. Check that you have the mailboxes sorted correctly.

Show a VIP’s emails
1. In the Mail app  on your Mac, click the arrow for VIPs in the Mail sidebar or the Favorites bar.
2. Select a VIP.
3. Only messages from the VIP are shown in the message list. If expected messages aren’t shown, choose View > Sort By, then choose All Mailboxes (a checkmark shows it’s on).
4. When you’re done, click Inbox in the Mail sidebar or the Favorites bar to show other messages again.
You can also filter emails to show only emails from VIPs.

You can find these steps and more in Show emails from VIP senders in Mail on Mac - Apple SupportShow emails from VIP senders in Mail on Mac - Apple Support.

Regards.

I wasn't able to get the Rebuild to work. I can see the emails in my inbox and I can use search to find them. Just didn't show in VIP folder nor show if I filtered by VIP. So I removed all VIP's from sidebar by removing the people from VIP list and I removed both of my mail accounts I use, rebooted my MacBook Pro and re-added my email accounts back to mail and added the VIP's back to the list and they showed on sidebar. I let mail sync with the servers overnight. Mail has completed the syncing and I checked the VIP folders and they are working as expected. Guessing maybe the index got screwed up somewhere and needed to be rebuilt. I may have happened during an update to Mail.

Resolution for me:

  1. Removed VIP contacts from mail
  2. Removed mail accounts from Mail
  3. Rebooted MacBook Pro
  4. Opened Mail and added mail accounts back, iCloud and Gmail
  5. Added contacts back to VIP list
  6. Let Mail sync with Mail servers overnight
  7. Checked VIP folders - all mails are correctly showing now.

Case closed. :)

Thanks but that didn't work. I can see the folders on the left. Just no emails in the folders. I only have 1 VIP that has mail in the folder and it has current emails. The others, that should have it, because I received emails just last Friday, doesn't show any emails from that person in that VIP folder. Even if I make sure to have the correct filter setting. Also if I try to look at the Inbox with Filter for VIP person, no emails show in the Inbox either, even though there's about 15-20 emails from the VIP person in my inbox.
