After an update, I opened Pages and selected white blank template page.. It does not allow me to type anything. The page is blank with no cursor. I can add a textbox and type in that but the usual page editing no longer works. Any suggestions?

You opened a blank Page Layout template instead of a word processing Blank template. Only the latter allows you to type in body text. The former only allows text in inserted Text boxes.
