You can also drag the folder on your Mac into the iCloud Drive location for the entire folder to sync.

As far as I know, you cannot upload a folder to iCloud. You can upload individual files and then create the folder in iCloud to store the files.

iCloud is a syncing service. If you delete the files from one place, they will be deleted from all devices.

External hard drives are cheap these days. If you need to free up space on your computer, buy one and move the files there.

You can compress the folder into a zip file, and then decompress it while in iCloud: Do so use Finder your Mac. Trash the compressed folder once decompressed.

I have had the Mac since 2021 and have never uploaded all my data to iCloud because I am not going to open each folder to then select an individual file to do it. That is a bit ridiculous. I'd rather use my 2TB iCloud storage compared to my Google Drive but Apple doesn't offer this feature... still...

The other option you have is buy a SSD and format for Apple's file system so you back up your data locally rather than to the iCloud.
