Airpods Pro 2, poor sound quality to other party

I have the Airpods Pro 2, which is up to date with firmware. For some time, when I made calls, the other party often complains of poor sound quality; usually my sound from them is OK. I do use sound cancellation, to mute out external noise, but would that also interfere with sound quality to the other party?
