Both my wife and I have iPhones. No matter what we do we can never get iMessage to work. We both have text and data plans and iMessage still will not work. We have sms turned on and no iMessage. All messages come in green.

Hello mikesgoldfish, You say you have sms turned on and no iMessage. All messages come in green. In Settings > Messages > iMessages needs to be turned on. Leave SMS turned on too. Your wife's iPhone needs the same settings. Give it another try and you should see Blue messages on phone iPhones. See this Apple Support page if still having trouble.
