Is that gmail address used on an Apple ID in any way already?

Even if its just a secondary address or reachable address, it cannot be used for your Apple ID.

Also, if your address is somewhat common, its not unheard of for mistakes to be made and have someone add it to their Apple ID by mistake, in which case it will also not be usable.
