I recently installed the Apple tv app on my Sony 4k Smart tv and bought a subscription and now am experiencing video distortion on HD app setting.
If I change the app setting to 'SD' then I get watchable pictures with occasional distortion around the edges of the pictures. Any ideas?
Can I solve the problem without having to buy a tv box, which I’m presuming wouldn’t have the same problem.

Does this issue occur with any other apps on your Sony 4K Smart TV? If not, let's try resetting the Apple TV+ app to see if you notice an improvement in video quality: Get the Apple TV app or Apple TV+ app on your smart TV or streaming device - Apple Support

I have done that but it hasn’t helped at all. HD impossible to watch but we are able to watch in SD so have restricted it to that temporarily. Will probably cancel subscription next month as it seems a waste of money to pay for something I can only watch in SD.

If possible, you might want to try using Apple TV from another TV to see if you can replicate the issue. This would depend on the TVs you have available though. If you're unable to test on another device to narrow the issue down, use this link to reach us directly: Get Support

apple tv works fine on my ipad on my wife's ipad. I don’t have another tv.
The tv is a 2018 model so I'm wondering if it’s just getting a bit old.
I've tried screen mirroring from my ipad but that doesn’t work either.
I can 'cast' all my other tv apps from ipad to the built-in Chromecast on the tv, but not the Apple app.
Sony Bravia tv here also. 4K. Bought films from the library on Apple TV play perfectly. Previews from series also great. But when you try to stream films or tv-programs / series the video gets distorted. Checked the streaming quality and the quality is good.
