Temporary Audio Output to older Apple TV 2nd Generation: no sound since update to tvos17

Use case: I have a stereo digital amplifier (Meridian 561). Since the demise of the optical port on Apple TV I have been using my old Apple TV 2nd Generation as the sound output.

Audio output stopped after the update to tvOS17. Output to other targets such as macbook and airpods max work correctly.

I have restarted the appleTV, made sure the software is at the latest version (tvOS 17.0 (21J354).

I have tried to change the Audio Format to Stereo or to 5.1

That sounds similar to my situation here: disconnect the Ethernet cable from your Apple TV 4K (not the old 2nd gen) and try connecting via Wi-Fi. Hope that helps (and please leave feedback if it does).
