I used to be able to drag and drop document into files on my MacBook Pro desktop and after the update it now won't work? I have tried changing the settings and nothing seems to work...
CORRECTION: This does work! I was in the Pointer & Trackpad settings under Accessibility which is why I didn't see it at first, but there are additional trackpad settings under Trackpad in the left nav of settings. That's where you can find the "Force Click and haptic feedback" setting. Turning that off worked for me, as the original poster said.
what i did was disabling the TURN ON SPRING LOADING and it worked
I know why this happens. It is not about system settings. It is that if you tap with a tiny tip of your finger, it doesn't work. You have to first tap touch pad to select a file, then with forefinger so that LARGE part of your finger touches the touch pad do the drag and drop. Don't make the touch pad click, but just touch the touchpad with large part of your finger touching the touchpad. Works every time, after I realised it.
I got intel-based 2020 macbook air. I think it is about a particular type of touchpads that doesn't work like other macbook touchpads.
I have the same problem and I can't fix it, but I can drag and drop by keeping option button pressed on the keyboard and then drag and drop.
vesque is a life saver - RE: DRAGGING FILES - "lightly" pressing track pad allows you to drag files.

Neither do I. We could explore a bunch of options such as creating an empty folder somewhere and dragging it onto the Desktop to see what happens, but I think it's a moot point: you're simply unable to do something that you were able to do prior to updating macOS.
Trackpad options should have nothing to do with it. The only suggestion I have is to reinstall macOS.
I have the same issue. Spring loading turned off and on again. What is going on? I neeeed that drag and drop
*EDIT* I CAN drag and drop, but not on to a folder tab like I used to. Now I must hold the file over the tab until the folder opens and I then I can drop the file into the folder. Dropping files on tabs is a HUGE time saver. Please fix this apple
Please describe what happens when you drag an item onto the Desktop. It should work the way it always has. What settings did you change?
Try restarting your Mac in the usual manner.

Go to your settings for your trackpad and make an adjustment to move the images. You should be good after that.
I have only changed trackpad settings, but have put them back to what they where. A box comes up saying ‘prepaying to move…’ but it doesn’t actually move the documents into the file. I just can’t understand why I can’t just drag and drop like I could before the update?

restarted and the problem seems. Before the restart clicking on the file icon would open a thumbnail of the document so I couldn't drag it anywhere. Now it won't even do that. Click on the file icon and you can't drag it or do anything really
Thanks for alerting me about the Force Click "gesture" Barney. Thanks to Vesque as well. I'm not sure, but it seems that Apple's penchant for adding baffling changes/upgrades to the OS which confuse users could be handled more effectively? By the way, my niece is an F-15 strike eagle pilot. Not sure if that's an "E" model:
I have the same issue as the OP since upgrading to Sonoma. The spring loading option was already selected when I navigated to that area. Problem unsolved :(
None of these work including the latest idea "sort by none". I think there is something wrong with the operating system
