Persistent horizontal lines appear on iMac screen

I am reaching out to share an ongoing issue I, along with several other users, have been experiencing with our iMac 24-inch models, and to seek a collective resolution.

Problem Description:

  • Persistent horizontal lines appear on the screen, which significantly hampers the usability and visual appeal of the device.
  • This problem arises without any physical damage, and despite the stationary nature of the device.

Steps Taken:

  • Connected to an external display: The external display works fine, indicating the issue is with the iMac's internal display.
  • Reinstalled the OS: The problem persisted post reinstallation.
  • Avoided operating the iMac for a week: No change in the situation.

Concerns:

  • The cost of screen replacement is high, and there's no assurance that it will resolve the issue permanently.
  • The quality concern is alarming especially for a brand that positions itself as a premium segment player.
  • The support received thus far has been unsatisfactory, with no definitive solutions provided apart from a costly screen replacement suggestion.

Please do not ask us to visit to service center and replace the screen for 650USD + , problem happens mostly after warranty.

To make the best of a bad situation you could always use a separate monitor with the iMac. It's an annoyance given that there's already a display taking up desk space but at least you wouldn't have to get another computer. I kept several older iMacs going that way. Just make sure that if the display is really starting to go that you set this up before it is fully gone. You set up the second display as mirroring the first one and with iMacs this has to be done while you can still navigate the main display.

"They charged ne 30USD for inspection"

Who exactly is "they"? In the US, the Apple in-store diagnostic is certainly free; I've taken advantage of that twice in the last six months.

If there is a "consumer product protection" agency in your country. I suggest you file a complain. Please post the final results of that here if you choose to do so ... if you can file such a complaint of course.

Considering the millions of Apple Macs worldwide, the number of complains here is an exceedingly small percentage of the whole. Problems happen for sure, but just because it happens to you does not mean it happens to many. That's known as a "hasty generalization".

I've been to the Apple Store in Shanghai and the repair fee without Apple Care is about RMB 4,891 which is even more than the recycle fee lol. They said that the solution could only be screen replacement and they have no idea why the problem came out. Cuz there are so many user suffering the same problem I wonder if Apple should be responsible for this problem.

Probably their software updated caused this problem, no one reported similar kind of issue with imac24 inch for first 2 years. Now many from different parts of the world having this issue, it's exactly happenings in same spot for all the users. Apple should be made accountable. Clearly the problem is from their product side.

I have this problem also, the lines flicker with mine. It occured while I kept my computer stationary without moving it at all. It's clearly a defect with the display because it happens without a cause. Apple should offer a free fix to people who have these lines regardless of warranty status. I can't pay the 700$ currently and it's ruining my computing experience.

This is clearly a hardware failure and the only solution is to replace the screen. No one on this forum can fix it for you. I doubt it is something most users have the tools and training to do themselves. It is an expensive repair, but I do not see any other options.

About 40 others seem to have posted with a similar failure. I do not know how common it is; there are many millions of iMacs M1 in use. Where I work, we have thousands of this Mac model in daily use and I have not heard of any failures like this. I do not doubt that your failure is real, but it might not be very common. All electronics have some non-zero failure rate, I believe these parts are mass produced overseas, a small fraction of all electronics like this have defects. I think the way to protect against this type of repair bill is to get Apple Care, but that is hundreds of dollars spread over several years, I buy it anyway for my personal Macs (which include one iMac M1). If I look at all the iPhones and personal Macs I have owned and how often I used AppleCare for a "free" repair, I have paid way more for Apple Care than I would have for the repairs myself. But I still get Apple Care for peace of mind as laptops and iMacs and iPhones continue to increase in cost ...

Exact same issue popped up on my 2021 M1 24" iMac this week. Purchased it back in April 2022, so a little under 2 years. I have it connected to a secondary monitor, which works fine. Only the main iMac display's showing this issue. Have also tried resetting the iMac which didn't work.

Have an appointment scheduled at the Genius Bar in Singapore tomorrow, which I plan to cancel. There's no point bringing my device there only to be told to pay upwards of $800 to get a screen replacement done when I can get a Mac mini for the same price. Everyone in my family is on the apple ecosystem, including MacBooks and Mac minis because because we trust in the quality of Apple products so this happening is just shocking.

What region is your iMac Part number in? I suspect this is happening to iMacs in a particular region.

List of Model Number suffixes for different regions:

  • LL/A - the US and Canada
  • HN/A - Indian Subcontinent
  • E/A - Mexico
  • B/A - United Kingdom
  • D/A - Germany
  • F/A - France
  • J/A - Japan
  • CH - China
  • ZP/A - Southeast Asia
  • X/A - Australia and New Zealand.

I visited an Apple Store and they said it will cost £630 to replace the display with a 3 months warranty on the new display. I declined as this is half the cost of the iMac itself and the issue could return again. Even the “genius” at the store said they would not recommend replacing it.

This is completely unacceptable for “premium” hardware to fail after 2.5 years and Apple not able to repair it for free.

I will never buy an Apple product over £700 again.

The only last hope is the person at the store said if enough people have this problem then Apple could start a repair program. But I highly doubt this will happen.

Mine is HN/A - Indian Subcontinent

Response from higher authority in Apple is that they are not aware of this. Content in forum does not matter to them. They are saying that, problem is just for me, if others where having the problem then some one with similar complaints have reached out them, and they are saying that this is not the case.

I filed a consumer case at right now their response is that "Product is out of Warranty" and I should pay for the repair, Kudos to top premium brand *pple.

I bought mine in June 2021 and since it was a new product on the market I decided to pay 150€ to extend the warranty (store's insurance program) to 5 years. This issue happened this month and the store replaced the display with no additional charges.

They didn't specified the problem but it's not software related.

Two ports, Part number ends in PO.
