Philips Hue without a Home Hub

Hello,

I have a home with a Samsung smart TV, a Sonos system, and 2 Philips Hue light bulbs controlled by a Philips Bridge. A couple of years ago, I added them the Hue lights to Apple Home so they could be controlled by my wife and I using Siri. It worked great!

We just moved apartments and I tried to set them up again in the same configuration, but they were listed in Home as "Not controllable". So I deleted the bridge and tried to re-add it, but now Apple Home is telling me "Home Hub Required" to add the Philips Bridge.

So do I really have to buy an Apple HomePod Mini just to control two light bulbs?

I don't care about automation and I already have a large Sonos system and a 4K Samsung smart TV. Is there a work around for this?

Thanks in advance,

Joshua

Do better than that @Matthew.

That was not an useful answer and you know it.

Please answer properly: why has apple removed the voice controlled features when it comes to Philip hue?

This is not an issue with 'the manufacturer of the bridge' (Philips). This is an Apple-made issue. Apple is, in this case, limiting developers at 3rd party companies so their own solutions seems smarter and easier.

I guess it's greed, Joshua. Apple want to force their customers to buy more from them. Otherwise there is no need to change something that works.

Hi there Joshua Young1,

Thank you for posting to Apple Support Communities.

We understand that you have a question about the Home app.

We suggest ensuring that your iPhone is up-to-date with the latest software.

Before updating, we recommend backing up your iPhone first. These articles can be of help. When you back up, you can back up using a Mac or PC rather than iCloud if you choose.

If you're still having an issue, we suggest contact the manufacturer of the bridge, to see what is required.

That should help. Let us know if you have any questions.

Take care.
