I turned off Norton Safe Web, and the problem was resolved. I turned back on and MiTM threat reappeared. Must be a conflict between the two apps.
This is not an Apple app. For support, contact the developers of the Marriott App.
If you have not yet deleted the app and then reinstalled it, that might be a possible solution, and will likely be first thing that the support folks at Mariott ask you to try.

I contacted technical support at Marriott.
They advised switching off the VPN and/or uninstalling any Norton program if there was one on the phone.
Switching off the VPN did not solve the MiTM issue.
There’s no issue with the APP on my tablet.

I’m not sure why’s, but as others
suggested I deleted the VPN for Norton and it fixed the problem.
Another instance of VPN hurting more than helping. The only real reason to have a VPN on your phone is because your employer requires it to log on to their servers.
