Keychain passwords are incorrect

For a while now when I try to use a password in Safari, it fills in the wrong password, and results in that website locking me out for too many unsuccessful login attempts.

It just happened now with my Pennie health insurance account. This is the third time I've had to call them to unlock my account and send me a new password link. Am I going to have to go back to my old way of creating my own passwords and writing them down? I thought Keychain was supposed to be a better way of managing more secure passwords.

I used the link the admin person from the account sent me, changed my password to the strong password suggested by Safari and updated keychain, then when I went to log in to the website Safari filled in the wrong password and now I am locked out of the site again.

Can anyone help? What am I doing wrong?

It could be you have multiple passwords saved in Keychain for your health insurance account. When in Safari - click Safari settings, then choose the passwords tab. Enter your computer password to unlock/view the A-Z list of websites with passwords saved for them. Type "Pen" in the search bar & hopefully more than one result for Pennie Health will come up. If so - delete the one with wrong password so only one Pennie Health username / password remains. Next time you go to log in - keychain has only one record to use for autofill.

Sounds like you may need to go into your keychain and clear out the old ones. i recommend doing it on a mac if you can. You'll appreciate the window space to maneuver. Also if you have a password safe, you can disable using that until you sort through your keychain. Apple keychain now is much smarter, but if you have any legacy usernames and passwords lingering, only a manual clean out will help. On the brighter side, when you go into your keychain, it will tell you the last time you changed it or used it. It's not perfect, but can be helpful. Stick to one personal rule that if it doesn't work the first time, to right then, delete it (or save it to a save just in case, for your to later investigate). That will help you not get locked out so much (it happens to us all tho!).

It's like cleaning a closet - not fun, but SO worth it once you do it. and will be reliable again. It's normal housecleaning a lot of people don't talk about much and we can take our keychain for granted. I just got through doing this myself and I thought I was doing a better job on staying on top of mine. I've been a keychain user from when first offered, and I do a big clean out every couple years. Especially the pandemic, I was shocked how many changed (creating multiples, which apple now helps identify if you want to change it and eliminate creating duplicates).

Also if you have the lastest ios, when you delete the username/password in the keychain, it will move it to a "deleted recently" bin. If you goof, you simply restore it. A really nice feature! If it sits there, after 30 days it's auto deleted.
