The Photos application appears to have lost its ability to crop photographs by individual sides but rather alters the whole picture. Is this correct?

Open Photos

Select a picture

Press 'Edit'

Press 'Crop'

Trying to bring just one side in alters the whole perspective

Have you set the aspect ratio to "freeform"? Otherwise you cannot drag just one side without moving the other sides or corners as well.

And the Straighten tool or perspective tool will create black triangles on the sides by rotating or distorting the picture. Photos does not allow the black triangles to remain and the cropping rectangle is restricted to the parts of the image that do not include the black triangles.
