Broadband/wifi connection

I have recently changed my broadband provider from Sky to Virgin media. My iPad connects to the internet with no issues and loads quickly. However my iMacPro (2017) takes about 20seconds to connect to Google and up to a minute to load up a website.

I connected my iMac to the router with an Ethernet cable to see if it was a weak wifi signal but connected direct was no faster than wireless?

Is my OS incompatible?

currently running macOS Sonoma Version 14.2.1 (23C71)

Is my Web Browser incompatible?

Safari Version 17.2.1

any clues how I can improve the connection speed?
