When opening the second document, the first one "slides" out of the screen.

What Mac do you have and what macOS version is it running...?
At this point, I suggest that you visit and review your Mission Control preferences/settings.
Uncheck all of the boxes in macOS Monterey and earlier.
Turn off all of the switches in macOS Ventura and Sonoma.
