Horizontal lines at the bottom of iMac(M1,2021) screen

Bought this device on Dec 2021, and today the screen shows many horizontal lines at the bottom of the screen and this is also a grey area showed up, which also blinks at a frequency ~2-5 seconds. This is very annoying and makes it unusable. Since I had many devices, e.g 2018 MacBook Pro 15, 2022 M2 MacBook Air, 2022 M2 Mac Mini, so did not use iMac like 7(days/week)*24(hours/day). There are many reports on this issues which can be found on iFixit and Youtube. I think it's a manufacturing or design issue, or just bad parts causing this problem. Had old iMac being used for >10 years and had no issues. Also other displays (Aoc, Dell, LG, Samsung) I have used (1-8 years) never had this kind of issues. Apple should investigate why this occurred and repair the faulty parts.

After reading all the threads related to this issue, I've contacted Apple chat support and tried to negotiate a free repair for this widespread issue.


Apple chat support said that they don't have the authority to do this and ask me to contact phone support. Phone support said the same thing and asked me to take the iMac and go to Apple store. And Apple Store support said they can't do anything unless the issue appears in this Apple Service Programs list, and he suggested me to leave a message in Apple Feedback.


Everyone, please leave a feedback to make Apple fix the issue.

Well I understand and I have seen about 200 posts on these forums about it, I have no idea how many machines that represents however even if it's about 500-1000 machines that is a relatively small number in the grand scheme of things. It's definitely no fun when it's your machine and you don't have AppleCare though.


I suspect you represent a very small minority in that you only own your devices about 2-3 years, my current machine is 4+ years old (2020 27" iMac) and I plan on keeping it until as long as it can run current versions of Mac OS. That being said, your machine needs may be significantly more demanding than most so buying the latest and greatest may make a lot of sense. Even if you only own 2-3 years AppleCare may make sense for years 2 & 3, that being said obviously it's your decision and as I mentioned already this time your number just came up!

I’m experiencing the same issue with my iMac 24” M1. I purchased it in August 2021, and today I encountered the same problem. The top part of the screen shows lines and flickers. Additionally, the top left corner of the screen becomes extremely hot to the touch, almost burning my finger if I hold it there for more than a few seconds. I’ve noticed that many people are experiencing similar issues with the iMac M1 chip model. Apple should address this issue immediately and provide a permanent fix at no cost. Otherwise, people may lose trust in Apple products. At the very least, there should be a software patch to resolve this display issue in the iMac M1 chip model.

If the repair is out of your budget ranger an less costly workaround is to get a 3rd party monitor, put it infant of the iMac and set the iMac's monitor brightness to off and use the 3rd party monitor. 4K monitors can be had for $200 and up for 27" and $300 and for 32": brand LG.

Answers that suggest rest SMC or NVRAM, please notice that Macs with Apple silicon no longer have these features.


Also have run Apple Diagnostics, by holding power button till Options screen shows up and then press Cmd+D till it goes into diagnostics. There it says no hardware issues being found.


Running sonoma 14.4.1 on this iMac and restarted several times, and the problem still exists. Also tried unplug all connected external devices except keyboard and mouse, still did not work.


Did not move this monitor for >1 year and also no other damage to this mac.

Assuming your purchased AppleCare (always a wise move) then it will be covered. I have been a long time Mac owner and have owned many of them, when I invest that much money in a computer I want the peace of mind that AppleCare offers. If you passed that up and it is a hardware issue then please consider this instance a lesson learned about self insuring. Most of the time it doesn't pay off, until that time you need it.

Even I too have same issue I bought iMac 24 inch M1 in 2021, I normally use 2 to 3 days in a week, all of sudden screen started flicking. Apple service Center suggested for screen replacement which cost approximately $900 SGD. I am not sure how apply is selling products now a days with loss of trust on their products.

It's unfortunate and I agree a screen should last much longer than 3 years. I am using an iMac here, 2015 model. Recently recycled an iMac 2008 that failed because of its power supply, not the screen. All computer makers purchase in bulk parts for their products from third parties, there is an acceptance of a certain percentage of failures or defects, maybe a percent or so. At work, we have quite a number of iMacs and Mac laptops, I noticed that my employer now has Applecare+ on all of them. And we are required to replace all computers every three years at work. I have never seen one of those iMacs fail, so the percentage might be low.


All my personal Macs are laptops or iMacs, which have a lot of chips and hardware fit into very tight spaces. This makes them prone to thermal issues or other internal connector problems, hence I always get the Applecare+ and consider it simply part of the cost. We have actually never made a claim for a Mac (we have had many, so I guess we have actually lost money on buying the Applecare+ there), but my daughter has had two claims on iPhones which resulted in new phones.

My guess is your graphics card has tanked, probably through overheating. *Or* your video cable has gone bung. You can’t do anything about the graphics card in an integrated logic board, so it would cost a packet to replace the logic board. If you hook it up to an external monitor do you have the same issue?
