All photos being incorrectly dated back to 12/31/1979 when downloading from Google Photos to Mac

Every now and then I download the photos from google photos to my mac, so that I have them all on iCloud. The dates are correct on the google photos before downloading, and my macbook pro date is set correctly. After downloading the photos from google to my mac downloads folder, all photo dates are set at 12/31/1979. It doesn't matter if I do one at a time, or a batch of 300, they are all re-dated to 1979. How can I correct this without changing each photo back after the download and before importing to Apple photos?

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 10.13

Since Google isn't an Apple product, it might be more useful to contact Google. Or have you already done that?

My guess is that Google strips personal information, including the date, from the pictures to preserve your privacy. They may be able to direct you to a method that keeps the metadata.

Have you used an app like ExifTool Reader to see what's contained in the metadata?
