Syncing Laptop & Desktop Documents folder - made duplicates instead, help!

I had previously been syncing my desktop and laptop Documents folder using ChronoSync, so each device had an identical copy of each document.

I just upgraded to Sonoma (on each device) and was prompted to sync Documents & Desktop using iCloud, so thought I'd give it a try. BUT IT DIDN'T SYNC – instead, I've got two copies of everything clogging up my iCloud drive.

How do I make this actually sync and not just duplicate??? Do I have to manually delete everything now???

iMac 27″, macOS 14.5
