iCloud account linked to a .mac email address

My iCloud account is linked to my old .mac email address which I haven't used in forever and assume is no longer functional. In the mail app settings I see the iCloud account it is inactive and attempting to enable it yields no results.

From my research I understand that .mac emails are no longer available and I need to use the more recent iCloud domain however when I go to set up an @icloud.com email my @mac.com name isn't available as an option. I was able to grab FirstnameLastname@mac.com and would like to continue using FirstnameLastname@icloud.com for my Apple ID.

Am I correct in thinking another user has already claimed the iCloud version of my email or is it possible that I can gain access to the @iCloud account that matches my @mac account?

Hey yes I saw this article as well but that is the issue I'm having. I created my Apple ID with FirstNameLastname@mac.com but it doesn't appear that I can use FirstnameLastname@icloud.com even though this article seems to suggest I should have both FirstnameLastname@icloud.com & FirstnameLastname@me.com

What did Apple Support tell you when you contacted them?

The agent I got didn't know what to do really. She told me my @mac email is lost (which is totally fine) and to set up a new iCloud email but I'm just confused why it won't let me use FirstNameLastName@icloud.com when the documentation seems to suggest I should have already been given that address. Just want to be sure I've tried everything before giving up and going with a version with my name + numbers.

I have some recollection of not keeping my @me.com address active and having to choose something different when I activated my @icloud.com email address. The address I have is certainly different than what I usually use. I think there was something you had to do at some point when the changeover happened and I didn't do it.
