iTunes not saving manually added artwork

iTunes will not save song or album artwork that I add from any of the approved file types. It shows up as a preview on the Info pop-up, then does not apply to the song(s) after clicking Save. My device is up to date, I have unlocked security on the iTunes folder via Finder, and restarted with no success.
